Early morning walk…with a twist!

Yes, there was an interesting twist to my early morning walk with Bimi this morning – Joseph came along with us!

Obviously remembering my stories of bears and such along the trail, my swashbuckling hubby grabbed a fallen tree branch, intending to use it to protect his ladies if needed. When it snapped as he touched it to the ground, he realized it probably wouldn’t do much good, so he flung it, discus-style, away to the side. Imagine our shock when it took wing and embedded itself in a 20 foot palm tree beside the street! Even the kid who usually sits by the road, smoking a cigarette while waiting for his morning ride to whatever school expelled kids go to (don’t ask how I know!), remarked with admiration. “You know I did that on purpose, right?”, Joseph informed him. Bimi and I knew it would not be the “same-old, same-old” early morning walk.

We walked past a cable repair guy on a mechanized ladder, fixing something on a pole and my precious hubby said, “Good thing I have Direct TV!” The cable guy glared down silently. Bimi and I looked at each other and said “wooooow!”

Then we saw a little baby snake wiggle across the path in front of us. “That was no snake, it was a lizard – it had legs!” Now how does someone who only sees the trail at the speed of blur while flying by on his road bike recognize a baby snake as it wiggles nervously out of harm’s way?

There was one sober moment when we stopped by the memorial to a lady who was killed recently while riding her bike (she collided with a vehicle at an intersection along the trail). We said a prayer for the family she left behind and made our way back. By the time we got home, Bimi and I were pouring sweat and out of breath, a testament to our efforts to keep up with Joseph’s long, purposeful strides. Certainly not the pace we normally travel at!

Never a dull moment with Joseph, that’s for sure. And I wouldn’t have it any other way!!!!!

How fortunate you are that your family walks together, even if it’s not all the time. My son Alex and I used to walk, before he turned 16. Missing those days.

Hope, alas, my early morning walk days appear to be numbered! You see, Bimi will be a high school freshman in the fall and will have to catch the school bus at 6:20am. You think I’ll be walking at 5:00am? Na-uh!

JT – it’s called “spousal liberty”. I’m choosing to exercise it! Trust me, there are worse photos I could use – you should thank me! And yes, it WAS a snake (LOL!)
