Uh-huh, it’s my birthday…

My birthday cakeToday marks the day I was born, many, many, many, many years ago – or so it seems! When I look back on my life, I feel like I’ve lived many lifetimes. And I’ve loved each one of them. Maybe not necessarily while they were happening (for some of them), but certainly after the fact.

It was a quiet day, spent at home with the family (not counting the couple of hours at the gym), with good food and good company. Plenty of time to ponder my many blessings, take all my birthday phone calls and respond to each of the umpteen Facebook birthday greetings I got (yes, I’m weird like that). I feel so blessed! Sure if I had it to do over, I’d script a few things a little differently. For example, I’d have washboard abs and better hand-eye coordination. I’d have my son home for the weekend from college. When my Dad called from Nigeria, I’d get to also hear my Mom’s voice, instead of sending her hugs and messages through God. I’d have answers to some of the questions I’m asking God during this season of my life…you know, stuff like that.

For now, though, there are many things in the script of my life that I am most grateful for. Things like good health. A family I love, that loves me back. Friends who care. A car that’s old, but paid for. A nice roof over my head. Food in my fridge and pantry; a fridge and pantry! Nice clothes and shiny, pretty things to wear with them. Oh, and the shoes…yeah, I’m a shoe girl and I like my shoes. For these, and so much more, I am truly thankful.

On top of all of that, it’s Friday – booyah! 🙂

You know you’re getting old when…II

OK, can I just go on record for saying this (all the while naming no names to protect the identity of the innocent)?…

No woman, regardless of age, tribe or tongue, color or creed, whether dead or alive, in the past, present or future. No woman – EVER! EVER!! EVER!!! – deserves facial hair!

And that’s all I’m gon’ say about that!

You know you’re getting old when…

So…I had an idea today to come up with a few signs of aging that I’ve noticed in my own life. Do feel free to jump in with a few of you own. I must admit, as much as I’m enjoying this season of my life, there are a few aspects of it that I didn’t sign up for (or maybe I missed the fine print). Be that as it may, I’ll take the good with the bad but I’ll pass on the ugly, thank you very much.

So here’s my first observation. You know you’re getting old when…

…you start talking to yourself, just like some of those “crazy” old folk you knew when you were growing up.

Today, I went to the post office to pick up some office mail. As the clerk handed me the certified letter I just signed for, I noticed that it was addressed to the right recipient, but at the wrong address. So I proceeded to wonder out loud why on earth the sender would use that address. I didn’t realize that the clerk was watching me as I took the letter and walked away while staring at it, audibly mumbling my perplexity. An awkward silence prompted me to look back and in an embarassed tone, I said, “Oh, don’t mind me, I talk to myself sometimes.” He smiled uncomfortably and said, “OK, but I wasn’t gonna say nuthin’…”
